Sunday 31 March 2019 is World Backup Day! The messaging is aimed at individuals - as a reminder to backup important files, photos, videos and emails - because, according to the World Backup Day website, 30 percent of people have never backed up, even though every month sees one in 10 computers infected.
But, the day serves as a useful prompt for the business world as well, as tech publication IT Pro reports that around four million UK businesses could be at risk of losing data due to inadequate - or even non-existent - backup practices.
Backup is the copying of files, folders, and any other type of data to a secondary location, and which can be restored in the event of a problem - whether that’s the result of a cyberattack, natural disaster (such as fire or flood), or merely human error, and an employee hitting the wrong button at the wrong time.
Backup forms part of a business’s disaster recovery strategy, a plan created to ensure that should disaster strike, the business can be back up and running as quickly as possible. The strategy incorporates policies defining backup and recovery processes - such as those covering which data is to be backed up and how often, through to the creation of a regular test programme.
Helping our customers to create and implement sound backup and disaster recovery strategies, to include a robust backup solution that suits their individual need, forms an essential part of our services offering.
Without a backup and disaster recovery policy, businesses risk being in breach of regulatory and corporate compliance requirements, as well as losing reputation and revenue in the event of data loss.
