If you’re active in the Microsoft Dynamics community you will no doubt have heard of the new project with the working or code name ‘Tenerife’. The name has been bandied around for a while now but a little more concrete information was revealed at the Directions EMEA conference held in Madrid at the start of October.
Tenerife will be replacing some of the existing Dynamics products, initially starting with Dynamics 365 but eventually incorporating Dynamics NAV as well.
There’s been a lot of conflicting reports over the past few weeks. It’s still early days and schedules can change but here’s what we know about Dynamics Tenerife so far…
Dynamics NAV 2018 to be released in December
Dynamics NAV will eventually be brought under the Tenerife banner – although as ‘Tenerife’ is only a working title, nobody is sure exactly what the name of the eventual product will be. Before that happens however, a new version of NAV, titled NAV 2018, is due to be released. It’s been confirmed that this will arrive on December 2, followed by an update (NAV 2018R2) in spring.
Dynamics 365 for Business replaced in Spring
The Business Editions of Dynamics 365 for Financials and Operations will be replaced by Dynamics 365 Tenerife from spring of next year. This product will be based in the cloud as an SaaS (Software as a Service) solution with Dynamics NAV still serving businesses who want to maintain an on-premises solution.
It will essentially expand the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Business Edition by adding the full capabilities of Dynamics NAV. This will be the first time that the full range of NAV functionality has been brought to the cloud.
On Premise to continue alongside cloud
There’s little doubt that Microsoft’s focus is in cloud-based offerings, but the On Premise solution will continue to be offered, for the medium term at least. This will take the form of the new Dynamics NAV versions initially but eventually, this too will be brought under the Tenerife umbrella, whatever final title and marketing this is given.
The idea is that there will be a single suite of applications available, albeit vertically divided into cloud and On Premise. Customers will no longer need to use the predetermined packages of Dynamics 365 editions but will be able to build solutions to meet their own individual requirements, by selecting only the apps they need at a price point that works for them.
