While it was WannaCry’s attacks on well-known organisations that hit the news – the UK’s NHS, Germany’s rail company Deutsche Bahn, and Spain’s telecommunications Telefónica, for example, - WannaCry also targeted and infected millions of small businesses and individuals.
Across 150 countries, more than 300,000 computers were affected, with a ransom fee demanded to free encrypted data files.
However, as bad as that was, the story could have been far worse.
The global leader in cyber security, Symantec Corp is reporting to have prevented near on 22 million WannaCry attacks across 300,000 different end-points, due to utilising real-time threat intelligence shared across Symantec Endpoint Protection and multiple layer industry-leading protection, including Symantec’s advanced machine learning, network exploit protection, SONAR behavioural protection, and the Intelligent Threat Cloud.
Mike Fey, president and chief operating officer at Symantec, said: “The WannaCry ransomware attack is the largest we’ve ever seen of its kind and we’re pleased to share that Symantec customers benefitted from multiple layers of protection even before it happened, through innovations and new capabilities in our Integrated Cyber Defense Platform.”
Michael Frisby, Cobweb MD, comments, “Symantec’s advanced machine learning technologies provided real-time, zero-day, protection for all of our Symantec customers when WannaCry broke out.
“As Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network automatically shares threat intelligence between Symantec Endpoint, Advanced Threat Protection, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, Content & Image Control full protection is provided across all protected end-points, including the cloud.”
Symantec recommends that businesses ensure that the Windows security update MS17-010 has been installed, and advises that Symantec Endpoint Management can be used to distribute this – as well as other vital patches and software updates – across the whole business. They further urge businesses with Symantec Endpoint Protection to verify that proactive technologies are turned on to enable the advanced exploit prevention technology to create a total block to WannaCry attack attempts.
