Microsoft Teams | August 2018 Updates

There are quite a few updates to Microsoft Teams this August. Let's take a look!

Communication updates

Do not disturb

Users can now enable certain people to reach them in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, so users can still focus on their work. It’s easy: just click on the profile pic, and then Settings > Privacy and follow the prompts.

PowerPoint for meetings

Hate it or love it, PowerPoint and meetings go hand-in-hand but sometimes it doesn’t go to plan if there are bandwidth constraints. Now, you can share them using very little bandwidth, so participants can read them privately. Find out more here

Auto Attendant and Call Queue calls

Auto attendant

Microsoft Phone System Auto Attendant is now widely available, and Call Queue is in the pipeline. With these tools, users will be able to receive and answer calls from Skype for Business Online’s Auto Attendant and Call Queues. Read more here

Collaboration updates

Free teams!

A free version of Teams is now available in forty languages. This allows for a Team of up to 300 people, and includes other useful perks like unlimited chat messages, search and integrated audio and video calling. This latter feature works for individuals, groups and full teams.

Wiki and Teams

The new Wiki app will now allow users to access their private and channel Wiki places from one place. Users will be able to find it in the More Apps section on the left-hand side of Teams. Plus, they’ll also be able to access their personal Wiki from anywhere in Teams.

Customisation and third-party integration

A number of new apps have added to Teams in this month's August updates.

Bitbucket: this app allows intuitive collaboration on code that is written by developers. The graphic below illustrates this seamless feature. Find out more here

Jira bot: Plan, track and release software via Teams. What’s more, users can easily find issues and assign tasks, with plenty of other useful features. More info here

New features for IT admins

There are a number of updates to make admins’ lives easier.

Firstly, a new built-in Call Analytics Dashboard will allow for an overview of call and meeting quality.

User-level policies and organisation settings have both been updated too, which will improve everything from messaging and calling to guest access in the Admin Centre and PowerShell.

New reports and data

Usage analytics are now generally available for Microsoft 365. These allow a comprehensive insight into how organisations use the whole suite — including Teams. Analytics include usage reports on chat, meetings and channels.

Usage analytics in Power BI for Microsoft 365 – now generally available – allows users to understand how your organisation is using Microsoft 365, including Microsoft Teams. Find out more about these Microsoft 365 updates here.

Meetings: mobile users can now share a PowerPoint file during calls or meetings via their mobile device.

Calls: Incoming calls can now be forwarded to a particular call group, plus users will also be able to transfer or consult with them before accepting calls from an auto-attendant.

Other updates: Users can also now share videos from devices’ gallery into Teams’ chat function, and copy a channel’s email address.
