Emma Jobling, Head of the Cobweb team, writes…
The UK government has just published a press release (5 March 2019), UK Boards of biggest firms must do more to be cyber aware, highlighting that many of the FTSE 350 boards still don’t really understand the potential impact of a cyberattack on their business.
The information is taken from the newly published Government’s Cyber Governance Health Check report, FTSE 350 Cyber Governance Health Check 2018, and, while it focuses on the cyber security strategy of the UK’s FTSE 350 companies, its findings are just as relevant to the small-to-medium size business sector.
Because, as we wrote in February, it is a myth that SMBs are not targeted by cyberthreat - with in actual fact, small businesses the victim of 58 percent of malware attacks.
The government paper states that while 71 percent (up from the 54 percent ion 2017) of the 350 FTSE respondents judged the risk of cyberthreat to be high and 96 percent reported having a cyber security incident response plan in place,
- Only 57 percent regularly test their incident response plan
- And only 16 percent have a comprehensive understanding of the full extent of the effect of a cyberattack on their organisation.
The importance of security should never be underestimated!
Digital Minister, Margot James: "Technology is a crucial and growing part of modern life… We are still working through the implications of a more connected society and the necessary adjustments that we need to make. As our life and work moves increasingly online, we are exposed to a wider range of potential threats.
"The UK is home to world leading businesses but the threat of cyber attacks is never far away. We know that companies are well aware of the risks, but more needs to be done by boards to make sure that they don’t fall victim to a cyber attack."
And the crucial fact to bear in mind, is that there is plenty of support and help to protect against cyber threats - for businesses of all size!
Margot James also says, “Cyber security should never be an add-on” - and that sums up Cobweb’s approach. Securing the business should be an integrated part of every business’s IT strategy.
