Microsoft has announced that customers with Windows 10 subscriptions purchased via the CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) programme – through a Microsoft partner such as Cobweb – can upgrade their Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs and devices to Windows 10 at no extra cost.
Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5 became a partner delivered cloud service in September 2016 due to demand for a partner-managed cloud service subscription – from customers as well as Microsoft partners. The offering enables businesses of any size to access the security, management and control features of the Windows Enterprise edition, without the need for a long-term volume licensing agreement.
Of the January Windows 10 CSP upgrade announcement Microsoft says, “This is an important benefit addition to Windows cloud subscriptions in CSP as it enables customers who have yet to purchase a new Windows 10 device, or who missed out on the free upgrade to Windows 10 campaign, to take advantage of enterprise-grade security, managed by a trusted partner, for the price of coffee and a donut.”
Tenant admins can upgrade the device they are using and share the download link with others by logging in to the Office 365 Admin center (using Active Directory admin credentials). The Windows 10 upgrade licenses issued through this process are perpetual for the individual device, and won’t be revoked or expire if a customer subsequently ends Windows cloud subscription via the CSP programme.
Cobweb CTO, Julian Dyer, comments, “Endpoint device management (for PCs, tablets and smartphones, etc.) can be challenging and this offering will be of real benefit to customers. It means that all SMBs can now upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise on a pay-as-you-go basis.
“It’s also an exciting development as it paves the way for ‘Windows as a service’.”
