In 2019 it was announced that the Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) would be switched off in December 2025. With 6 years until that date, there was no major rush from businesses to change.

Fast forward 2 years later, and the more forward-thinking businesses are now starting to make their contingency plans.

PSTN is what many call a standard telephone line. It has been around since the 1800’s so has had an unbelievably long lifecycle! PSTN connects devices on 1 line from 1 device, like a landline telephone. It is also associated with the first dial up internet (the one where you heard the funny buzzing noise!).

ISDN was introduced in 1967 and uses digital transmission of voice and data. ISDN can be integrated with a private branch exchange (PBX) and allows more than one employee to utilise the same line at the same time.

The current systems, running on copper wire, have become increasingly expensive to maintain with the increased costs being passed onto end users. Alternative methods are cheaper, quicker and less volatile.

As of 2023 customers will no longer be able to purchase new lines, with the complete switch off taking place in 2025. It is expected there will be a rush to change between 2023 and 2025 with many businesses leaving it to the last minute.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is the replacement for these services. VOIP uses the internet to transmits voice calls and data. VoIP can use your current devices to send information through the internet. The result is minimal change to your systems while maintaining communication coverage.
